Meet the Artists – Blackbird’s Emporium

Blackbird’s Emporium

martin-pedder-and-bec-peart-copyBec Peart and Martin Pedder have collaborated creatively for nearly two decades. They have produced props for gala events and street theatre, created costumes for conventions, and also once shared a retail outlet selling their creations. In more recent years their collaborative artwork has taken the form of assemblage sculptures, two of which have been award winners.  Bec and Martin’s style has been likened to ‘Steampunk’ and ‘Neo-Victoriana’, but mostly they just enjoy tinkering with old junk.

Both artists see the aesthetic potential in reclaimed materials, and work predominantly with recycled items. A strong interest in history draws them to old and discarded items that have their own story to bring to their creations. Their re-purposing of everyday items is also the artists’ way of promoting recycling in our modern throwaway society.

Martin is a graduate of NIDA’s Production Crafts Theatre course, and Bec has a background in commercial art and fashion design. The combined talents of this dynamic partnership bring together Martin’s use of large scale and theatrical, and Bec’s use of design, detail and fashion.

What are we up to now?

More recently Bec has been selling her unique range of clothing and accessories through events such as Supanova (Brisbane), The Witches Night Market, Steampunk Fair in Wynnum, etc. To see what events she will be at next follow us on Instagram or Facebook.  Alternatively, take a look at the Etsy store to see a range of her wares.

In between spending time with his crow companion, Martin has been honing his skills of furniture upcycling and upholstery with a new venture ‘Up and Up’. His stunning pieces can be seen by following his Instagram here.
